Which CRM actually fits a solar installation business?

A lead comes off an ad, you call back in minutes or they book someone else, then it's site assessments, finance, permits, crews — and a five-star review once the panels are on the roof. Here's the honest comparison, including where HubSpot wins.

HubSpot

A great solar platform — built for bigger teams and bigger budgets

HubSpot genuinely works for solar businesses. The CRM, automation and reporting are excellent — but they're built as an enterprise solution for larger teams with the in-house technical resource to configure, manage and optimise everything.

For a growing solar installer, the real issue is cost. Seat fees, contact-tier pricing and bolt-on Hubs for marketing, service and operations mean your bill blows out as you scale — often before the extra revenue shows up. If you don't have a full-time CRM admin or RevOps person on staff, the setup, customisation and ongoing housekeeping can quickly become a second job.

Sparkhaus

The only all-on-one solar CRM

Built around the workflow you already run: lead lands, you're back to them in under five minutes, nurture by SMS and email until they book, proposal out, finance followed up — then the review request fires automatically once the job is done.

It bundles the marketing, pipeline, booking and reputation tools most installers stitch together from four or five apps. One login, one flat cost, one number your customers text back.

The part that catches people out

Pricing structure matters more than the sticker price

HubSpot's cost isn't really "$X a month" — it's a function of how many contacts sit in your database and how many people need seats. Run paid ads and generate hundreds of new leads a month and your bill climbs with them, including for leads that never convert. Add a second or third rep and seat costs stack on top.

Pro and Enterprise tiers also commonly carry mandatory one-off onboarding fees, which surprise a lot of buyers late in the sales process.

A flat rate removes the growth penalty

Running a $10k/month ad campaign and generating 800 leads shouldn't cost more in software fees than pushing 100 leads through the same system. With contact-tiered pricing, that's exactly what happens.

Speed to lead

Why missed-call text-back matters more than it sounds

Solar leads are time-sensitive. Conversion drops sharply once a callback takes longer than five minutes, and several competitors are usually calling the same homeowner.

A platform that fires a text the second a call is missed — "Sorry we missed you, when's a good time to chat about your solar quote?" — keeps the lead warm while your rep finishes the last call. Small feature, outsized effect on show-up and close rates. It has to be native, not bolted on through an integration.

Reputation

Reviews are part of the sales cycle, not an afterthought

Your Google review count and star rating decide whether the next homeowner trusts you enough to book an appointment at all.

Automating the request the moment a job is marked complete — instead of relying on a project manager to remember — is one of the highest-leverage things a CRM can do for a local contractor. It isn't something HubSpot handles without another tool.

Being fair about it

Where HubSpot still makes sense

If you're a national or multi-state operation with a dedicated marketing operations team, a complex attribution stack and the budget to fund proper implementation, HubSpot's reporting depth and CMS capabilities are excellent. It's a legitimate enterprise platform.

The trade-off: you're paying for — and staffing — a lot of capability a typical solar sales and install operation will never touch.

Choose Sparkhaus when…

  • An owner or sales manager needs to run it day-to-day, without a platform admin.
  • More leads shouldn't mean a bigger software bill.
  • You don't want to spend years (and thousands) trial-and-erroring systems customised for solar and electrical.
  • Your design app and job management platform are staying — they just need to connect.

The bottom line

Want to see it set up for solar specifically?

If you need a CRM that handles the lead, the follow-up text, the appointment, the proposal and the review request — without hiring a platform administrator or budgeting for onboarding fees — Sparkhaus is built around that exact workflow. We'll walk you through the pipeline, review automation and missed-call follow-up. No pitch. Onboarding spots are limited and often waitlisted.
